Keeping Your Website Secure with PHP 8.x
At EckhoMedia, we are committed to ensuring your online presence remains fast, stable, and—most importantly—secure. As part of our ongoing server maintenance, we are currently transitioning our hosting environments to PHP 8.x.
What is PHP and why does it matter?
PHP is the “engine” that powers your website. Like any software, older versions eventually reach their “end of life.” PHP 7.4 and earlier versions no longer receive security patches, making them potentially vulnerable to modern cyber threats. Upgrading to PHP 8.x ensures your site stays compatible with modern web standards and benefits from significantly faster performance and tighter security.
How this affects WordPress Users
If you are running a WordPress website with us, there is great news: most WordPress sites are fully compatible with PHP 8.x. Our team will handle the transition behind the scenes, and in the vast majority of cases, no action or additional cost is required from you. If, for any reason, we can’t upgrade your WordPress website’s PHP version behind the scenes, we will be in contact with various options.
How this affects OpenCart Users
For our e-commerce clients using OpenCart, the transition requires a bit more care. Most current installations are running version 3.0.3.8. While this version has served us well as a stable version in recent years, it was not originally designed for PHP 8.x.
To ensure your shop continues to function correctly after a PHP update on our servers, we recommend upgrading to OpenCart version 3.0.5.0.
Upgrading OpenCart is a little more complex as there are many variables, such as plugins or bespoke features, which might not work after a straightforward upgrade. For this reason, we will be in touch with all OpenCart clients to discuss options and costs.
Understanding the Risks
While your current site may be working fine today, technology moves at a rapid pace, and so do potential vulnerabilities. Staying on an outdated PHP version carries risks. Potential security vulnerabilities in older environments can include:
- Cross-Site Scripting (XSS): Where attackers can inject malicious scripts into your site.
- SQL Injection: Risks to your database integrity.
- Lack of Security Patches: As developers stop supporting older versions, new “bugs” go unpatched, potentially leaving a permanent “open door” for hackers.
Responsibility and Next Steps
We view our relationship with our clients as a partnership. Our role is to provide a high-quality hosting environment and the expertise to perform these upgrades. However, because some upgrades involve bespoke work and potential third-party module updates, the decision to proceed with the upgrade is yours.
Please Note: While we strongly recommend these security updates, EckhoMedia cannot be held liable for security breaches, data loss, or site failures. Our role is always to provide the safest hosting environment we can and advise you of any additional upgrade work that will incur costs.
We’re Here to Help
We don’t want this to be daunting. Our team is already upgrading websites that can be upgraded behind the scenes, and for those that can’t be upgraded due to compatibility issues or require additional work or support, we will be in touch to discuss your options and costs.
Ready to secure your site? Contact us today to discuss your upgrade path or to ask any questions about how PHP 8.x affects you.
