We have received notification that OpenCart and PayPal have now ended support for their legacy payment module.
If you’re currently using an older PayPal integration, such as Website Payments Standard (WPS), please be aware that this legacy solution is no longer supported by PayPal or OpenCart. PayPal have announced that continuing to use it could put your shop’s checkout process – and your customers’ trust – at risk.
To ensure your shop remains secure, reliable, and up to date, PayPal strongly recommend switching to PayPal’s latest solution: PayPal Complete Payments (PPCP). If we have attempted to upgrade your website to this option in the past but found problems, we recommend revisiting this in light of the support ending for the legacy payment module.
Here’s why PayPal recommend making the switch:
- Works seamlessly with OpenCart versions 2.0.0.0 and up.
- Offers PayPal’s most advanced features, providing a better experience for you and your customers.
- Provides enhanced security and stability for your transactions.
- It’s free to use, with no additional fees to upgrade.
Our thoughts on this:
Whilst PayPal have been recommending the switch for the last 12+ months, we have attempted upgrades on various shops with mixed results. What features are required for your own shop’s requirements will determine the outcome of any future upgrade tests.
We faced issues in the past with some of the new features offered in PPCP, and after reaching out to PayPal, no solutions were reached. This might have changed with recent updates. Getting PayPal basic payments to work with the new PPCP module might be the main goal to start the transition.
