What is SEO?
SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimisation“. In the simplest terms, this means how well your website is optimised to increase your website’s visibility on Google, Bing and other search engines.
The better your SEO is, the better visibility your website will have and the more users/traffic your website will receive.
Types of SEO
There are 3 key types of SEO.
- Technical SEO refers to the technical aspects of your website. This includes things such as:
- Ensuring your website is built in a clean and crawlable format
- Make sure your website address is secure using the HTTPS protocol
- Use SEO friendly URL’s
- Make sure your website is responsive and works well on mobiles and desktops
- Use a fast and reliable hosting server to ensure fast loading times
- On-site SEO refers to the content and images your visitors and search bots will see. This includes things such as:
- Ensuring you use the correct H1/H2 tags as important headings
- Your content should be well written and easy to read whilst ensuring it includes enough text and accurately describes the service or product you offer
- Images should be optimised for different screen sizes to speed up page load times
- Images should also include alt/title tags which help the bots understand what the image refers to
- Off-site SEO refers to things you might do that are not directly on your website. This includes things such as:
- Raising brand awareness through social media
- Listing the website on various business directories
- Setting up an accurate Google My Business listing
- Building a backlink portfolio over time which helps promote your website
- Having a great review score on your chosen review platform
How does SEO work?
Ensuring you have an SEO strategy in place is the first step to successful SEO results. An SEO strategy includes researching your market, identifying keywords that people search for and then formulating a plan of how you will target those keywords to generate traffic.
When using all 3 key types of SEO mentioned above correctly, your website should start to be found more by the search engines. Over time your website should rise through the rankings and the ultimate goal is to get your website on Page 1 as high as possible for your chosen keywords.
The search engine bots are always at work and the more work you do on your SEO the more chance you have of the bots finding and listing your website on the major search engines. The algorithm the bots use is always changing and your SEO strategy should always be adapting to try and improve your website’s overall ranking.
